Hunters: Follow import regulations to keep Oregon CWD-free

SALEM, Ore.—As hunting season opens in states where Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been detected, ODFW reminds hunters traveling to other states that it is illegal to bring any deer, elk or moose part containing central nervous system tissue into Oregon from states or Canadian provinces with a documented case of CWD.

Boaters Need To Remain Alert And Sober To Stay Safe On Waterways

COLUMBUS, OH – The arrival of the Labor Day Holiday weekend signals the traditional end of the summer boating season. Recreational boaters are encouraged to remain alert and sober to stay safe on Ohio’s waterways, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Watercraft.




Snapper A Possibility

Finally, red snapper anglers have a ray of hope that they will be able to catch their favorite species in 2010. Of course, two important steps must be accomplished before anglers will be allowed to catch the fish that made the Alabama Gulf Coast famous - NOAA Fisheries' blessing on the fall snapper season that was approved by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council last week and the opening of fishing in federal waters that have been closed by the oil spill.




Most of Puget Sound Closing to Crabbing

OLYMPIA - Recreational crab fishing will close for a catch assessment in most areas of Puget Sound at sunset on Labor Day, with summer catch reports due by October 10.

Seven areas of Puget Sound will close to crab fishing Sept. 6, including marine areas 6 (eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca), 8-1 (Deception Pass to East Point), 8-2 (East Point to Possession Point), 9 (Admiralty Inlet), 10 (Seattle/Bremerton), 11 (Tacoma/Vashon) and 12 (Hood Canal).




Bethesda Angler Catches Diamond Jim Imposter Near James Island

$25,000 Diamond Jim Still On The Loose, Challenge Ends September 6

Annapolis, Md. - The third Diamond Jim imposter of the 2010 Maryland Fishing challenge was caught on August 22 by Devin Singer of Bethesda, Md. Singer was enjoying his first-ever fishing trip near James Island aboard the Charter Boat "Never Enuff," skippered by Captain Shawn Pruitt out of Solomons, Md., when he caught the tagged striped bass. The Diamond Jim imposter, worth $500 in prize money, was one of nearly 600 rockfish tagged so far this summer.




Invasive Mussels Still Threaten Utah

Even though boaters are putting their boats away for the season, a nasty little invader could still make its way into Utah over Labor Day weekend.

And Lake Mead would be a likely source. Larry Dalton says the number of quagga mussels produced at Lake Mead each year reaches its high point in September and October.

PLATTSBURGH, NEW YORK - Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, South Carolina, caught a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 15 ounces Thursday to capture the lead in the FLW Series Eastern Division tournament on Lake Champlain with a two-day catch of 10 bass weighing 39-11.

Workshops Set for Possible Red Drum Regulation Changes

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled a series of public workshops this fall to discuss possible fishing regulation changes for red drum (redfish).

The FWC is considering creating regional management areas for red drum and raising the daily bag limit from one fish to two per person in Northeast and Northwest Florida. The Commission is also seeking public comment on possible red drum rule changes for Southeast Florida.




Kansas Lifts Lovewell Reservoir Closure

MANKATO - On Aug. 26, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Secretary Mike Hayden rescinded all previous orders restricting water use at Lovewell Reservoir. The lake is now open to full recreational activities, including fishing, boating, skiing, personal watercraft use, swimming, and wading.




Florida Snook Harvest Closure Still in Effect

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds anglers that the harvest season for snook in Florida, which usually opens on September 1, will remain closed through September 16. The FWC issued an executive order in January that temporarily closed harvest seasons for snook statewide to protect snook populations affected by prolonged cold weather in Florida earlier this year.
