Mullet are here....  (United States)

Ok, so evidently I'm a bit behind but the mullet arrived in Jupiter, FL about a week ago.  Every year in early September the mullet come blasting through this area and the action on the surf really heats up.  Having not yet purchased a boat since I moved to Fla, I'm always struggling to find a decent place to fish from shore.  Last year, I experienced the mullet runs for the first time.  I must say it was probably one of the most amazing events I've ever witnessed.  Huge black slicks of mullet stretching for what seemed like a mile.  Tarpon, Shark, and Snook just blasting bait like you wouldn't believe.

With all this action going on, fishing the surf is better than ever.  My personal preference is either an X-Rap or large swim bait thrown parallel to the surf.  The snook seem to hang out right in the trough.  You'll be amazed by how close to shore you'll get hit.  Early mornings and just after sunset seem to be the most productive times (as usual).   Now, I never tried this, but I've been told that if you can manage to net some large mullet, that you will have a great chance of landing a decent Tarpon.  You definitely shouldn't miss out on some surf fishing this time of year.
