10 Fishing Essentials  (United States)

10 Fishing Essentials

Below are a few of the most important measures to take in order to ensure fishing success.  Most items listed will be obvious to some but the obvious is often times over looked by others.  If you care to contribute, feel free to reply

  1. Have a stealthy approach: Most species of fish are easily spooked.
  2. Positive Attitude: Having a positive attitude while fishing is key.  Always believe you'll land the big one.
  3. Polarized Glasses:  Any measure you can take to assist in sight fishing is a plus.
  4. Stop by the local tackle shop often:  Talking to other fishermen can always help you keep up on where the action is at.
  5. Be aware of your surroundings:  Keeping an eye on water clarity, wind direction, moon phase, etc. can help you establish a patter to catching more and bigger fish.
  6. Fishing Guides:  Take at least 2-3 guided trips a year.  Fishing guides have a lot of experience on the water.  You can always learn something there.
  7. Fishing Log:  Go back to item #5 and store these properties in either an electronic or paper log.  Trying to remember what worked well for you more than a year ago can be next to impossible.
  8. Use Proper Equipment:  Line, Reel, and Rod selection is critical.  Be sure to match up the correct rod length/weight, line strength and reel capacity to produce an effective outfit.
  9. Selective Harvesting:  Practice catch and release whenever possible.  The best fish is fresh fish.  Only take home fish if you're planning on consuming them shortly after the catch.  Also, leave those lunkers in the water.  Releasing larger fish will help produce healthier offspring.
  10. Fishing Clubs:  Join a fishing club.  Fishing clubs offer endless resources to help improve your game.  And if your in need of a fishing buddy, then you will likely find one here.
